Advanced Health Assessment
Engage students with conversation-based learning
Digital Clinical Experiences™ allow nursing students to demonstrate and perfect their clinical reasoning skills through life-like interactions with Digital Standardized Patients™. Digital Clinical Experiences are powered by our conversation engine and assessed using our proprietary Student Performance Index™.
Interview:Utilizing our natural language conversation engine, students engage in open-ended conversations to gather subjective data and practice patient-centered communication.
Examine:Students perform tests and use instruments to gather and then record objective patient data.
Document:Students synthesize their findings and compare their work to an exemplar's model note.
Learn:Students engage in debriefing immediately following every assignment, and are given feedback on the discrete components of clinical reasoning measured by our validated Student Performance Index.
Just like a living patient, 28-year-old Tina Jones, has a rich medical and psychosocial history for students to uncover. Students interview Tina to obtain her complete health history, where they discover additional health concerns. Then, they examine Tina head-to-toe, one body system at a time, to gather subjective and objective patient data and form a comprehensive understanding of Tina's health.
Brian Foster, 58, is experiencing a change of status. Students determine the seriousness of his complaint and take a relevant health history. Students perform a focused cardiovascular exam, explore related systems and symptoms, and practice communicating with a patient in distress.
Esther Park is a 78-year-old woman who usually enjoys good health but is currently having abdominal pain and reports having trouble going to the bathroom. When students perform a focused abdominal exam to explore her past medical history, they can uncover a detailed reproductive and surgical history.
Daniel “Danny” Rivera is an 8-year-old boy who has had a cough for several days, especially at night. During the Digital Clinical Experience, students perform a focused respiratory exam, explore related systems and symptoms, and practice communicating with a pediatric patient about his health, home life, and cultural beliefs.
Rachel Adler is an 16-year-old adolescent who is coming in for a routine checkup. In the conversation concept lab, students will learn to structure an effective patient interview using open and closed questions.
Advanced Health Assessment
Single System Examinations
Shadow Health’s patient cases are designed for both novice and expert students to practice communicating with and examining patients. The advanced health assessment patient case is a series of single-system clinical examinations of Tina Jones, who comes into the clinic to receive care over a period of 18 months. This case also provides students with the opportunity to document their findings to assist in synthesizing the data they have discovered during the interactions.
Each of these focused exams cover a different chief complaint providing students opportunities to examine multiple body systems. During each Digital Clinical Experience, students may perform a focused respiratory, abdominal or cardiovascular exam to explore related systems and symptoms, and practice communicating with patients about their health, home life, and cultural beliefs.
Concept labs are immersive tutorials that illustrate complex topics. Concept labs include examples of real body sounds and realistic, 3D anatomical body models to compare and contrast normal and abnormal findings. The interactive interface of these concept labs can be used to explore body systems at an in-depth level. These experiences bring classroom concepts to life.
Each assignment provides students with immediate feedback and gives faculty the opportunity to review both individual student and class performance on each simulation. Our Results Book allows for flexible grading strategies and provides students with multiple areas of feedback including model answers and documentation.
Measure Clinical Reasoning
Shadow Health® has developed and validated the first conceptual framework to operationalize clinical reasoning within virtual patient simulations.
This innovative framework includes six discrete components of clinical reasoning: Subjective Data Collection, Objective Data Collection, Therapeutic Communication, Documentation, Information Processing, and Self-Reflection.
Shadow Health’s Student Performance Index™ automatically scores clinical reasoning abilities, and contextualizes students’ performance by comparing their results to those of their peers nationwide.
The Student Performance Index provides both you and your students with the immediate, detailed feedback necessary to accurately identify areas of strength and opportunities for remediation.

I actually learned a lot from this activity. I was impressed by the inferences I made. I also realized how much I do not know as well. This really helped me and I took away how to set up my interview questions for example what to ask first and also what is important to ask.Graduate Student / Medical University of South Carolina
I enjoyed the digital clinical experience with Tina Jones. The experience was very similar to my actual patient care.Graduate Student / California State University Fresno
It helps me realize all the work that I really need to do. Going into the exam I felt as prepared as I could be but I now see that I was scattered and need to be more organized in my questions.Graduate Student / University of Florida
